Bakeries of Cape Town
For all the importance of supporting and promoting authentic, local culture, it's also important not to get too wrapped up in notions of purity or dogma. Cultures are living and dynamic, and their responses to outside influences are what fuels creativity. Cape Town, in particular, is a creolised port city with influences from every part of the planet that have intermingled for hundreds of years. For example, the distinctively local and lekker koeksisters come to Cape Town by way of Dutch colonists whose tea cakes were re-interpreted by Malay servants and slaves in Batavia using local ingredients, baking techniques and preferences, and then brought to South Africa as the Dutch colonial power ebbed and flowed and spread its people and influence. (How the bland Afrikaans plaited super-sweet syrup-soaked pastries came to share the same name, I have no idea. The real thing has cardamon, ginger, anise seed, orange peel and more, with coconut sprinkled on it.) So I'm casting my eye (and stomach) to some non-African cultural influences on South Africa by devoting a chunk of Afrikatourism real estate to the bakeries of Cape Town (not coffee shops, chocolatiers, cafes or delis, although some bakeries may overlap with the former). We are spoiled with some of the most remarkable baking establishments, and below are my partial and highly subjective preferences in no particular order. Olympia Bakery and Cafe on Main Road in Kalk Bay is an iconic destination that remains beloved by locals and thankfully unpretentious. Be prepared to queue on the street if you arrive at a busy time and want breakfast or lunch, but around the corner is the bakery where you can pop in and out, laden with all manner of exceptional goodies. Gets my vote for the best ciabatta on Earth, but the nutter triangles and Greek shortbread are both favourites as well.![]() There's a nice little history of Olympia Cafe at the Sure-Fire blog that's well worth the read, and a bit of history of the Olympia Building too. Also worth noting is the tiny vineyard behind the cafe - Kalk Bay Vineyard, officially - producing Cabernet Franc that's available for sale at the bakery or with a meal at the cafe. Cassis Paris patisserie & boulangerie in the Gardens Centre shopping centre in the Gardens suburb of central Cape Town has rapidly become a place I stop to spoil friends and family. This is pure Paris, baby. Great breads, too, including the best real sourdough in town. Every single item I have tasted has been not just good, but exquisite and in every aesthetic dimension.Well-trained and educated staff, friendly, affordable -- wow. What more can I say? Magnifique! Raith Gourmet is a first rate German deli also in the Gardens Centre that does some baking of its own and imports other baked goods. Great stuff (Alpen Bread, Sunflower Bread, Double-Baked Sour Dough, Vita Rye, Sesame, Oldenburger Dark Rye, Linseed Rolls, Poppyseed Rolls, Plain Rolls, Kaiser Rolls, Brezel Rolls, and Brezel), but if you're looking for a proper b Yahoo: bakery oven Bakeries of Cape Town bakery oven baking industry Google: bakery oven baking industry Bakeries of Cape Town bakery oven |
